PROTECTION ZONES FOR DRINKING - WATER SUPPLY RESERVOIRS (DAM) {The Protection and Water Management Laws of 2004 to 2012 and the European Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC}
Cyprus as a Member State of the EU is obligated by law (WFD and harmonizing Cyprus legislation) to protect all drinking water sources in the country. The Water Development Department (WDD) as the government department responsible for the implementation of these legal obligations proceeded to design and implement a programme to protect all present and future drinking-water supply reservoirs.

Presently there are 11 dams the reservoirs of which are used for the abstraction of water for human consumption. These dams are: Kouris dam, Arminou dam, Asprokremmos dam, Kalavasos dam, Kannaviou dam, Lefkara dam, Germasogeia dam, Dipotamos dam, Klirou-Malounta-Akaki dam, Tamassos dam and Xyliatos dam. The Evretou and Argaka dams are intended to be used in the future for water supply.

The programme for the protection of drinking-water supply reservoirs encompasses:
    1. The establishment of 4 Protection Zones; the Immediate Protection Zone, the Close Protection Zone, the Distant Protection Zone and the Riparian Protection Strip.
      i. Immediate Protection Zone (IPZ)
      The IPZ provides protection against damage and pollution to the immediate environment of the water intake and pumping equipment.

      ii. Close Protection Zone (CPZ)
      The CPZ is the most important protection zone in which the strictest management measures are prescribed. It acts as a buffer zone against the possibility of direct pollution of the reservoir water by ensuring that human activities (which constitute the main pressures and sources of pollution to the reservoir) are kept at a safe distance from the reservoir.
      The CPZ comprises that part of the catchment area from which the bulk of pollutants is directly washed into the reservoir. It includes the area immediately upstream of the dam as well as the stream reaches and stream banks which contribute significantly to the reservoir inflow. The width of the CPZ increases with the slope of the ground in the area.

      iii. Distant Protection Zone (DPZ)
      The DPZ reinforces the Close Protection Zone. It protects the reservoir water against possible pollution pressures in the area comprising the entire reservoir catchment.

      iv. The Riparian Protection Strip (RPS)
      The RPS aims to safeguard the riparian fauna and flora and provides protection to all streams contributing to the reservoir inflow against direct pollution which might be caused by human activities within the riparian zone. RPS comprises a 5 meter wide belt on either side of the stream.

    2. Prescription of General Conservation Management Measures within each of the four Protection Zones.

    3. Preparation of Action Plans to be implemented within the catchment area of each of the 13 drinking-water supply dams so as to protect the reservoir water against existing pressures.
    The work, which was carried out within the framework of the design and the implementation of the programme for the protection of drinking-water supply reservoirs by a team of WDD Officers headed by Dr. Gouisset, included:
