Curriculum Vitae MICHALIS POLYNIKIS Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment

Dr Michalis Polynikis was appointed Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources and Environment on 29 February 2008.

He was born in Kato Pafos, on 6 November 1948. He graduated from Kykkos Lyceum in 1967.

He studied Medicine at the University of Athens. He served as a rural doctor in the Prefecture of Achaia for one year and acquired his practicing license.

He specialized in Pneumonology - Tuberculosis at the «Soteria» Hospital for Pulmonary Diseases in Athens and worked there as Registrar until 1985. From 1985 to 1987 he worked as a Family Doctor for the Social Insurance Foundation of Ilioupoli, Attiki Greece, at the Commercial Bank of Greece as General Practitioner and as Medical Officer for the Insurance Companies Metrolife, Agrotiki and Ethniki.

From 1987 to 1991 he worked as Registrar at the Hospital for Pulmonary Diseases in Patra, Greece.

Since 1991 he has been practicing medicine in Pafos.

He is the Director of the Polynikis Tourist Enterprises Ltd since 1978.

He took part in all student struggles against the Greek Junta since 1968 and has contributed to the creation of and participated in the student Organisation PALMOS and in the Athens Polytechnic uprising.

In 1974, he participated in the resistance against the coup, in Pafos and in Limassol.

He was a trade unionist and a member of PASOK Party in Greece with active participation in the effort to implement the National Health System. He was also a member of the Cypriot Students Association AGONAS and of the Cypriot Scientists Association in Greece.

He is a member of the Social Democrats Movement, EDEK, and member of the Movement's Central Committee and Political Bureau.

He was a member of EDEK's District Committee in Pafos, and served as its District Secretary from 1996 to 1997.

He was elected and served as Municipal Councillor for the Municipality of Pafos from 1996 to 2001.

Since 2007 he is President of the District Committee of EDEK in Pafos.

He is married to Vasiliki Charalambidou and has twin daughters and one son.
