|“United Cyprus” delegation meets President Christofias
A delegation of the Bicommunal Peace Initiative “United Cyprus” was received yesterday by the President of the Republic Demetris Christofias, who informed the members of the delegation about the latest developments in the efforts to find a settlement to the Cyprus problem. “United Cyprus” was founded at the end of last year by 37 Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot organizations with the stated aim of rallying support for a united federal state.
The Turkish Cypriot spokesman of the organisation, Sener Elci, speaking to the press after the meeting through an interpreter, said that after having visited both leaders they determined that some progress had been made at the peace talks. “We will continue our struggle until the resolution of the Cyprus problem, and as a social movement we will show our support for the solution process in action”, Mr Elci added.
He further noted: “We would like for the Cyprus problem to be resolved on the basis of a bizonal, bicommunal federation with a single sovereignty, a single citizenship and a single international personality. We continue to support the effort of the two leaders with the aim of creating a united Cyprus, and we consider that the joint press releases of the two leaders on 21 May and 1 July were important openings towards the solution of the Cyprus problem”.
Mr Elci also called for more bicommunal cooperation in the social and cultural fields as “these efforts too will contribute towards a solution”. He further noted the urgency of reaching a solution since the illegal policy of bringing Turkish settlers in the occupied areas of Cyprus continued.
The Greek Cypriot spokesman of the organisation “United Cyprus”, Christos Efthymiou, said they welcomed the progress achieved at the negotiations and thanked President Christofias for his thorough briefing. He noted: “We would like to encourage the two leaders to continue their efforts, and we will be by their side informing society and setting up the mood for a solution, in opposition to the negativity and chauvinism that are being propagated within society and which create negative connotations for a solution”.
