Remarks by the Government Spokesman in Mumbai on the visit of the President of the Republic to India

The visit of the President of the Republic to India is extremely important and aims to affirm, among other things, the strong political relations between Cyprus and India and to strengthen further the economic and commercial ties between the two countries, the Government Spokesman, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, said today.

In his remarks to reporters in Mumbai, India, where the President of the Republic, Mr Nicos Anastasiades, is paying a state visit, Mr Christodoulides said that «the visit of the President is extremely important and aims to serve three goals:

First, to affirm the strong and high level political relations between the two countries, which, among other things, manifest themselves through India’s support over time for the efforts to find a solution to the Cyprus problem in various international fora.

Second, the growth and further strengthening of the commercial and financial relations in areas such as air transport, shipping and tourism. It is for this reason that the visit of the President of the Republic begins in Mumbai, which is the financial and economic centre of India. Within this framework, two business fora will take place, to which we attach special significance, taking into consideration also the large number of Cypriot businessmen, who are accompanying the President of the Republic.

A third issue on the agenda and an objective of the visit is to further enhance India’s relations with the EU. Let us remember that a few days ago Mrs (Federica) Mogherini (High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission) was also here, while discussions are under way for the reinvigoration and strengthening of the relations between New Delhi and Brussels, something that the Republic of Cyprus also supports. And within this framework there will be a discussion between the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister of India”.

It is noted that in the context of the President’s visit to New Delhi and his meeting with the Prime Minister of India, a number of bilateral agreements will be signed between Cyprus and India.
