The UNSG’s Spokesman replied to press questions on Cyprus

Dujarric.

Question: I had asked earlier about Cyprus, whether the Secretary-General has submitted his report to the Security Council. And I do have a follow up question on that. The Turkish Cypriot “Foreign Minister” said that they would from now on follow a policy which will allow them to be recognized within the international community as a sovereign state or establish an autonomous region which will be a part of Turkey. What does the UN have the say about that?

Dujarric: The copies of the report have got to the Security Council. I don’t think it’s a public document. It’s been shared with the Security Council. Asked for recognition of any territory in international organization, that’s an issue that is up to the member states, the members of each international organization. There is a procedure for the United Nations; there is a procedure for other international organizations. That’s not for the Secretary-General to decide upon.
