Remarks by the Government Spokesman on the sidelines of the deliberations of the European Council

The Government Spokesman, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, made today, 22 June 2017, statements to the Press on the contacts of the President of the Republic, who is currently in Brussels to participate in the deliberations of the European Council.

The Government Spokesman referred to the meetings of President Anastasiades with the new French President and the Chancellor of Germany. “The President of the Republic briefed the French President on the recent developments on the Cyprus problem and the upcoming Conference on Cyprus to take place in Switzerland, expressing the wish that the Chapter of Security and Guarantees will at last be essentially discussed, so that we finally achieve a result that would be fully consistent with the capacity of the Republic of Cyprus as a member state of the European Union. Also, views were exchanged on the relations of the European Union with Turkey, our bilateral relations, with special emphasis on the cooperation in the military and energy sectors”, Mr Christodoulides said.

In addition, the Government Spokesman said that, in this framework, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Ioannis Kasoulides, will visit Paris on Monday to meet with his counterpart, the Diplomatic Advisor of the French President, as well as with other officials on the enhancement of the relations between Cyprus and France.

Also, at the meeting with Chancellor Merkel, the developments on the Cyprus problem were discussed. The President of the Republic briefed the Chancellor on the issues of Security and Guarantees, while views were exchanged on the Euro-Turkish relations, and the relations between Cyprus and Germany. The developments in the Eastern Mediterranean were also reviewed. “Germany has an increased interest on the developments in the region and the role our country could play is important”, Mr Christodoulides underlined.

He added that “it was agreed, both with the French President and the German Chancellor, in view of the possible developments, that the dialogue should continue.

We shall reiterate that the President of the Republic will brief his counterparts tonight on the developments on the Cyprus problem, while a relevant discussion will be held, at the request of some member states, on the situation in Turkey. Therefore, President Anastasiades will express the positions of the Republic of Cyprus respectively”.

Asked whether the interlocutors of the President expressed their own position on the Security and Guarantees issue, Mr Christodoulides said that clear positions were expressed, “which are summed up to the fact that we cannot, in 2017, discuss about guarantees from third countries or the presence of occupation army in a member state of the EU. The positions were clear, as it also resulted by the previous contacts of the President of the Republic, but also it is the main position in European level. It is an issue, on which we could say more tomorrow, after tonight’s briefing by the President of the Republic”.

Invited to say how Cyprus is affected by the paragraph in the Conclusions related to the issue of common defence, the Government Spokesman highlighted that the position of the Republic of Cyprus is that we wish for the EU to be able to develop its own forces, to have all the necessary means, so that it could respond to contemporary threats that expand in many fields. “It is not about the traditional threats as we knew them until today. There are asymmetrical threats; there is the issue of terrorism. Especially, the Republic of Cyprus, situated in the sensitive region of Easter Mediterranean, wishes for this cooperation to proceed in European level with very specific decisions and measures”, he concluded.
