Agriculture
Agriculture continues to be a vital sector of the economy of Cyprus, despite its gradual decline due to the development of other sectors such as tourism and services and the difficulties due to the intensive competitive environment.
Today´s agriculture is not only defined by financial indicators but has a multi-functional role to play: In addition to the production of food it contributes significantly in preserving the environment and provides the means for improving and preserving life in the countryside.
Cyprus΄ accession to the European Union and the application of the Acquis Communautaire in agriculture has created a new environment with new elements for agriculture within a strongly competitive environment.
The Department of Agriculture envisages to face the new situation with success through the modernisation of the agricultural sector with special emphasis on the improvement of productivity and competitiveness, the application of new methods in integrated production, the production of safe products for the consumers, the application of measures for protecting and improving the environment and generally by targeting at sustainable development.
This developmental approach is evident throughout the Rural Development Programme 2007-2013, which was approved by the European Commission, on October, 2007.
The objectives of the Rural Development Programme 2007-2013 are defined in the following four axis of priority which include various measures:
Priority axis 1 - Improving the competitiveness of the agricultural and forestry sector
Priority axis 2 - Improving of the environment and the countryside
Priority axis 3 - The quality of life in rural areas and diversification of the rural economy
Priority axis 4 – Leader
Priority axis 5 – Technical support
One thing that helped in the process of Cyprus´s smooth induction to the E.U. was the creation of the Cyprus Agricultural Organisation.
One of the problems that Cyprus faces every year due to its warm climate is the drout.
