In General The Cypriot education system aims to the preparation of its citizens with faith in the human values of freedom, democracy and justice. Public Education The public educational system in Cyprus comprises three levels: First Compulsory Upper Secondary and Tertiary. Apart from the public schools, a number of private schools operate at the first compulsory and upper secondary levels, following foreign educational systems, mainly English and French. Additionaly, a number of special schools for people with disabilities (deaf, blind, people with mental, mobility and behavioural problems) operate at the first compulsory and upper secondary levels. However, it should be noted that, the majority of these people, study together with the pupils, who do not have any disabilities, at the public or private schools. University of Cyprus Open University Cyprus University of Technology Private Institutions of Tertiary Education Currently, 26 private institutions of tertiary education operate in Cyprus. These institutions offer educational programmes at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as vocational programmes of study.
