Most rivers rise from the Troodos area. The seasonal allocation of surface runoff follows the seasonal allocation of precipitation with minimum values during the summer months and maximum values during the winter months. As a result of the Eastern Mediterranean climate which is characterised by long hot summers and low average annual rainfall, there isn’t a constant flow of rivers along their full length. Most rivers flow for 3-4 months per year and are dry for the remaining year. Only the sections of some rivers found upstream the Troodos area have a constant flow (Xeros, Dhiarizos, Kargotis Marathasas, Kouris and Germasogeia rivers). Most rivers have a rather steep inclination except the rivers in the plain areas along the southern coast of the island. Most of the river sections, however, are located at mid- altitude.
